Swim Instructor-Group/Private (Finance)

Summary: Group swim instructors provide group lesson instruction in swimming techniques, skills, and water safety to participants. This position also has the opportunity to additionally schedule and teach private swim lessons, but it is not required.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties and responsibilities and illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive.
• Educates the swimming public to the habits and attitudes of safe aquatic activities and encourages their cooperation and support with good public relations.
• Leads group swim instruction for kids of various ages and skill levels classes of up to 6 participants.
• Maintains a safe environment for all students.
• Accurately judges placement of students for swim instruction.
• Prepares and signed all aquatic certificates.
• Correctly utilizes and cares for all aquatic equipment and teaching aides.
• Maintains a level of physical fitness required fulfilling any rescue or emergency procedure for any circumstance.
• Attends and participates in all required City sponsored clinics, workshops, and meetings.
• Assists in the maintenance and care of the facility, including cleaning duties.
• Performs any other related or similar duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position is not responsible for the supervision of employees.

• The Aquatics Department has a dynamic and changing schedule. Ability to work varying shifts is desirable, particularly weekends and holiday shift availability.
Education and Experience: Minimum age is 15.
Language Skills: Ability to read instructions and communicate with the aquatics supervisor and the general public. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from supervisors, user groups, customers, and the general public.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve and implement practical solutions to problems. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Foresee and initiate proactive measures to ensure program quality, customer service, and safety.
Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations: Current American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/PR Certifications are required or obtained within 90 days of hire.
Physical Demands:
• Bending, stooping, pulling, pushing, jumping, twisting, balancing kneeling, crouching, reaching, and climbing
• Physical activity is required in leading/demonstrating classes.
• Lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds
• Hand-eye coordination for the operation of a computer keyboard.
• Ability to read written materials and observe programs.
• Speech and hearing capabilities to maintain communications with employees and citizens.
Swim Instructor Performance Steps
Step 1
∙ Performs as required by job description with direct supervision
∙ Serves as a Swim Instructor with punctual attendance for all scheduled shifts without incident
∙ Attends all scheduled swim instructor training unless excused
∙ Independently sets up and tears down class equipment in a timely manner
∙ Accurate record keeping, including progress cards
∙ Regularly and effectively communicates with participants and their parents
∙ Favorable review by the Aquatics Coordinator
Step 2
∙ Performs all of the duties outlined in Step 1
∙ Initiative and ability to do work beyond what is expected
∙ Favorable review by the Aquatics Coordinator
∙ Assists in training new staff and sets a good example
∙ Has taught at least 15 sessions of swim lessons
Step 3
∙ Performs all of the duties outlined in Steps 1 & 2
∙ Assist the Head Instructor in the scheduling of classes and instructor assignments
∙ Gains knowledge in maintenance of pool equipment
∙ Thorough knowledge of the American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program with the ability to demonstrate skills to others and ability to teach any level
∙ Has taught at least 30 total sessions of swim lessons
∙ Favorable review by the Aquatics Coordinator
All steps are based on budget availability and the current City of Fort Collins Policy
Based on previous employee experience steps can be skipped with the approval of Area Manager
