Position Summary: Under the general direction and supervision of the Landfill Director, the Equipment Operator position involves skilled work in the safe and efficient operation of a wide variety of heavy and light equipment used for landfill maintenance and solid waste containment. Employee performs skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled manual tasks relating to equipment operations and the hauling and dumping of waste materials. Maintenance of all landfill equipment is required. Equipment operators in the landfill facility have continual contact with the general public in the performance of their duties.

Essential Function Statement(s)
Operate scrapers, compactor, loaders, graders other types of heavy equipment; Operate light duty trucks with and without a trailer; Operate mowers, grinders, welders, tire cutter and other types of light equipment; Clear and dig ditches and pits; Load and transfer materials and supplies; Perform or assist with mechanical duties when necessary; Perform light maintenance and service work in connection with the operation of related equipment; Assist public in locating areas to dispose waste and process citizen transactions.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
Work with labor crews as needed; Mowing and trimming of trees as requested; Other related duties as necessary or required.

Competency Statement(s)
Able to work legally in the United States; Operate a motor vehicle according to Kansas State law; Pass a post offer health assessment and drug test.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Experience: One to three years equipment operator experience. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills within six months to one year in the position.
Education: High School diploma or equivalent is required.
Skills: Knowledge of mechanics maintenance, welding, surveying, and hazardous waste and solid waste containment and disposal. Employee must have the ability to operate all heavy equipment, shop equipment. Must communicate effectively with others using the spoken word and proper writing style.
Problem Solving: Problem solving exists in this position.
Decision Making: Decision making exists in this position. Determines problems at the landfill and causes of malfunctions in equipment and decides the most appropriate action to be taken.
Accountability: Employee is not responsible for budgetary control and does not assist in the preparation of annual departmental budget.
Supervision: Requires some supervision. Job assignments are occasionally reviewed by supervisor.
Personal Relations: Occasional contact with county departments and frequent contact with the general public.
Working Conditions: Job performance involves physical effort and manual labor. Extreme weather conditions and toxic fumes are factors in this position. Ability to work extended hours.
