A Safe Harbor Marina Apprentice is committed to learning the different disciplines needed to work in a marina. The apprentice will be exposed to yard operations, sailboat rigging, painting (preparation & application), composite repairs, marine systems and mechanical work. Silver Spring is a small marina with a strong service background. We focus on Mercury outboard powered boats, and also service Yamaha and Mercruiser engines. We focus on Boston Whaler and Sea Ray boats, but also work on many other models. New bottom preparation and painting, Cleaning, Waxing and Commissioning of vessels is the primary focus of this position. Previous experience in the marine industry preferred, but not necessary. Training and equipment to be supplied by Marina.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Apprentices will rotate through various departments and can expect to learn and assist in performing various skills in the marina
· Learn how to prep surfaces to include stripping, scuffing, sanding, masking and priming surfaces
· Assist in applying coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer, as appropriate, to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings and fixtures of boats
· Learn how to Haul, block and launch boats
· Assist in performing general boat maintenance and service work to include, but not limited to: waxing, bottom painting and zinc replacement
· Work closely with the Yard Foreman and assist fellow crewmembers as needed
· Assist with inspecting, maintaining, and repairing boats of all kinds
· Learn how to utilize diagnostic equipment to test and repair boat engines, hulls, propellers, rigging, masts, sails, and navigational equipment
· Assist installing and testing sanitation and refrigeration systems, cabinetry, electrical systems, steering gear, and accessories
· Learn how to troubleshoot, test, repair, replace, remove and install vessel systems and components
· Conduct thorough assessment prior to starting a job including; acknowledging the budgeted time and time frame for completion, proving the system and the element requiring service, sourcing parts if required
· Willingness to learn knowledge of marine systems including electrical, plumbing & water systems
· Troubleshoot, repair, and install vessel systems and components including but not limited to: electrical, electronics, HVAC, plumbing & water systems (fresh, salt, and waste), gas and diesel engines
· Assign parts and purchases to the appropriate vessels/tickets
· Available to work overtime when required
· Other duties as assigned by Manager
Safety and Environmental Responsibilities
· Follow SHM Safety and Environmental rules and complete required related training.
· Wear proper personal protective equipment (may include safety glasses, gloves, life jackets and/or hard hats) as required for the task or work area.
· Report all accidents, injuries, spills and near misses immediately.
Technical and Physical Requirements
· High school diploma or equivalent preferred
· Technical school training preferred
· Ability to ascend and descend a ladder
· Ability to work in confined spaces and all weather conditions
· Ability to lift 50 pounds
· Basic boat handling skills preferred Must possess a valid drivers' license
